It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a weather balloon!!!

Last Saturday morning around 7:30 AM, Miss Pongetti's father was out checking his fields.
He saw a piece of orange plastic and assumed it was just some trash that had blown onto his field.

Well ... when he picked it up,
he realized it was actually a weather balloon  released by the National Weather Service!

How cool is that !?!?!?

Mr. Pongetti knew we recently finished a unit on weather.
He also knew it would be a real treat to share his unique discovery with us.

Miss Pongetti checked out the information about "our " weather balloon.
It was released from  Shreveport, Louisiana on Friday, April 19 and was found last Saturday, April 20 around 7:30 a.m.
That's 243 miles from here!

The balloon is on its way back to the National Weather Service so they can use the information to predict changes in the atmosphere, the air pressure, temperature, and humidity!

Thank you, Mr. Pongetti!

BOOM KABOOOOOOOOM!

We read the story Thunder Cake
by Patricia Polacco.

The recipe for the cake is
included at the end of the story.
Rebecca's mom and Miss Pongetti's
grandmother both graciously agreed to bake
a Thunder Cake so we could taste it!
Shhh! (There is a secret ingredient!)

They kindly served it up...

... while we waited expectantly!

Did we like it???

Oh yeah, baby!
It was delicious!

Thank you so much, Nana and Mrs. Blackstock!!!

100% chance of fun!

What is fluffy?
What is white?
What can you see
When skies are bright?

What can float?
What brings rain?
What may be higher
Than a bird or plane?

Say it out loud:
Clouds!

We used chalk, shaving cream and glue, and cotton balls
to create the three main types of clouds -
cirrus, cumulus, and stratus.

 Ta Da!

We also learned about the sequence of the water cycle.

Reading, singing, creating, and learning -
that's just how second grade rolls!

Congratulations Samantha!

Every second grader participated in coloring a farm scene for Farm Bureau and they all did an AWESOME job coloring!! Samantha Phillips won first place for PDS!! She received a certificate and a $20 gift card to Wal-Mart! Good job second graders for doing your best!
